Pre-Emptive Action: Knowing When to Act First

The legal, psychological, and physical parameters of defensive pre-emption.

By Benjamin VorbachKnowledge Base

When physical violence is imminent and escape is impossible, waiting to be struck is a losing strategy. Pre-emptive action is the tactical decision to strike first to disrupt an attacker's OODA loop and secure escape.

The Decision Matrix

Pre-emptive strikes must be legally justifiable: you must have a reasonable belief of imminent bodily harm. Use the fence stance (palms out, speaking calmly) to manage distance before striking decisively.

"Pre-emption is not aggression. It is the defensive execution of a strike to escape a threat when all other options have failed."
